00:51:44 stephen zunes: Sandra: What is the name and author of that beautiful opening poem? 00:58:53 Rahman Gael: thanks Joan & Fred! 00:59:21 Herb in DC, May Day!: My word is EVIL. Our favorite chant today was "Love Trumps Hate, that's what makes America Great." 01:01:25 Fred Cook: Malvina Reynolds: If you think you’ll love me for a long, long time . . . plant an apple tree. 01:08:27 stephen zunes: Here are links to a discussion I had with Rebecca Solnit last week on Authoritarianism and Resistance that some folks have found useful: At https://StephenZunes.org or https://usfca.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=3f6f3ca0-aa99-4d1d-ac76-b2c9016be343&fbclid=IwY2xjawKA8d5leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETE0Z0NFU1Z6M2xLS2RsMkxyAR79__NFV7-fg2jU2R9ybGdIo1L4dg5ZaU2jiGbccGI4vSl2_FEeAQPih6Y2tQ_aem_Gdt693ExPm0FUF1YztpCUQ 01:17:01 Fred Cook: Kirtan, for example: India Arie's "I am Light"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wInNA9vEtKY It helps remind me of that eternal, indestructible aspect of each of us. 01:19:16 Rosy Betz-Zall: Thank you, friends, I have to go, but felt a good connection with the topic and you all 01:21:09 stephen zunes: I highly recommend Rebecca's website and email list "Meditations in an Emergency" https://www.meditationsinanemergency.com/ 01:21:56 stephen zunes: She recognizes the seriousness of the situation but provides lots of signs of hope 01:22:22 Fred Cook: As a journalist, I have to be careful about “confirmation bias” . . . so when I am confronted with someone who seems to be SO WRONG, I try to pause and consider our “sources”, give the person the “benefit of the doubt” and recheck my own sources. Where the person is also very emotional about the issue, I try to ALSO consider what the trauma MIGHT be behind that. In many instances, I have been able to listen and ask questions enough and find the roots of the upset in a person’s experience . . . and move toward compassion. 01:24:21 Fred Cook: Hatha yoga and slow patient stretch helps me come back to being in a body . . . and lets me know when I am not being patient enough with myself, and I see the choice. 01:32:23 Fred Cook: One of my mentors, Ben Colodzin, pioneered work on healing trauma to make it accessible to working and poor people. https://bencolodzin.com/how-to-survive-trauma-by-ben-colodzin/ ONE of the methods he taught us was pushing our bodies to physiological edges, and then coming back to balance physiologically. An example, I’ve found helpful is sitting in a sauna or steam room. Ben had us build a sweat lodge, the experience of being SO hot . . . and then dunking into a cold stream, and then sitting with a blanket wrapped around me and feeling the heat equalize in my body. Same thing with sitting in very hot hot spring then dunking in cold plunge, then lying on the bench and feeling the heat radiate out from my bones through my cold flesh. 01:33:57 stephen zunes: https://www.nonviolent-conflict.org/role-of-civil-resistance-in-the-sudanese-uprising-and-political-transition/ 01:38:34 Fred Cook: There is a wonderful compendium of resources gathered from all around the world called Restorative Practices Alliance. It is focused on working with different branches of the Vagal nerve, learning to NOTICE what our “state” is, moving toward self-regulation, and then “Co-Regulation”. Many of the practices are rooted in different sensory modes, types of activities. https://restorativepractices.com/ 01:39:45 Fred Cook: It can be calming to pet a cat (that wants to be petted). It can be co-regulating. 01:43:12 Rahman Gael: Heart Rhythm meditation works with creating Waves of Peace and balancing, regulating and strengthening the Vagus nerve. 01:43:51 Fred Cook: Participating in community, for me it is working with the East Bay Permaculture Guild to co-create the POSITIVE future that we want and need. The “regenerative” vision helps me feel hopeful and like there are practical things to do . . . and working over time with a garden and seeing how nature brings forth abundance . . . is very reassuring. 01:51:44 david albert-The Permagardens Foundation: Sorry I missed most of it. 01:51:48 Fred Cook: As a journalist, I have increasingly been looking at things in a historical perspective . . . looking at the roots of how we GOT HERE. I feel that understanding the power dynamics gives me a more grounded sense of reality - what we are up against . . . and the other places around the world where people have dealt with these challenges.
