Movement for a New Society: Training, Vision, Strategy more
After establishing and operating training centers throughout the 1970s and 1980s in Philadelphia, Seattle, Twin Cities, Atlanta, New England and other locations, and training and supporting hundreds of activist trainers on every continent, MNS formally disbanded in 1988. But most of those it trained have continued effective advocacy, action and training with other organizations and campaigns, imparting critical skills and inspiration to thousands more globally.
Most notably, in 1988 George Lakey and Barbara Smith co-founded TRAINING FOR CHANGE, whose influence continues to grow after over three decades, during which it has trained over a thousand movement and campaign leaders. Among other key MNS leaders who provided major development and outreach are Betsy Raasch-Gilman, Erika Thorne and the late Nancy Brigham.
No MNS founder or alum has had greater impact than the late Bill Moyer whose Movement Action Plan, detailing the four roles of activists and Eight Stages of effective social movements, has been used by campaigns around the world for three decades.
