Movement for a New Society: Training, vision, strategy more
After establishing and operating training centers throughout the 1970s and 1980s in Philadelphia, Seattle, Twin Cities, Atlanta, New England and other locations, and training and supporting hundreds of activist trainers on every continent, MNS formally disbanded in 1988. But most of those it trained have continued effective advocacy, action and training ever since, imparting critical skills and inspiration to thousands more globally.
Most notably, also in 1988, George Lakey and Barbara Smith co-founded TRAINING FOR CHANGE, which continues growing after three decades training over a thousand leaders. Among other key MNS leaders who provided major development and outreach are Betsy Raasch-Gilman, Erika Thorne and Nancy Brigham. The Movement Action Plan (MAP):
8 Stages, 4 Roles, Campaign Strategy
“Doing Democracy: The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements.”
This essential guide provides the most usable theory and working model for understanding and analyzing citizen movements and how they can best succeed in the long term. Bill Moyer (with co-authors JoAnn McAllister, Mary Lou Finley and Steven Soifer), brilliantly compare MAP to nine popular models of social movements taught at universities, and apply MAP to five social movements: civil rights, anti-nuclear energy, gay and lesbian rights, breast cancer, and anti-corporate globalization. They conclude with a chapter on the future of activist strategies.
